Making a complex product range easier to navigate
Sussex Eco Solutions · Information architecture & digital experience
The challenge
Sussex Eco Solutions offers a broad range of fires, fireplaces and related products, from wood-burning stoves and gas fires to electric fires, bioethanol fires and fireplace surrounds.
With such a varied catalogue, the way products are organised plays an important role in helping customers find what they are looking for. The existing category structure needed to make the range easier to navigate, allowing customers to explore relevant products without having to work through an unclear or overly complicated hierarchy.
As part of the wider website migration from WordPress to Wix, I had the opportunity to review how the product categories were structured and presented.
My approach
I reorganised the existing product categories to create a clearer, more intuitive browsing experience. My focus was on making the range easier to explore by grouping products in a way that helped customers understand the available options and find relevant categories.
Creating a clearer structure
I reviewed the existing product categories and reorganised them to give the catalogue a clearer structure. The aim was to make it easier for customers to understand how the different product types fitted together and where to go next.
Supporting product discovery
The website needed to accommodate customers exploring different types of fires and fireplaces. I focused on making the category structure more straightforward, helping customers move from the wider product range towards the types of products relevant to their needs.
Considering the browsing experience
The revised categories formed part of the wider website experience, including how customers browsed the catalogue on desktop and mobile. I considered how the product categories were presented so that the structure remained accessible and easy to navigate across screen sizes.
The thinking behind the work
Product categorisation is more than simply arranging products into groups. It influences how people understand a range, what they notice and how easily they can find a relevant option.
My approach was to make the information structure work from the customer's perspective. Rather than organising the catalogue solely around the products themselves, I focused on creating a clearer route through the range.
This meant considering how the categories related to one another and how the overall structure could support a more straightforward browsing experience.
The outcome
The product categories were reorganised as part of the migration to Wix, creating a clearer structure for the Sussex Eco Solutions catalogue.
The work demonstrates how information architecture can support product discovery by making a broad range of products easier to explore and navigate.
My contribution
Product category organisation, information architecture and website content structure as part of website redesign and migration.
